Energy Costs of THM Removal Systems: A Side-by-Side Comparison

In-tank aeration has been demonstrated to be effective in removing trihalomethanes (THMs) from finished drinking water. While the capital costs for equipment and installation of surface aeration or spray aeration are roughly similar, the lifecycle cost for any of these technologies will be dominated by the cost of operation, principally in the form of energy usage.


  • Over the lifecycle of an in-tank aeration system for THM removal, energy costs dominate.
  • Comparisons of similar-sized aeration systems show that the PAX TRS spray aeration system is at least twice as energy efficient as surface aerators.
